Gablenz - Piano Concerto in D flat Op. 25 (World Premiere Recording)

RELEASED: JUNE 2021

"...who better to interpret it than Plowright, who surely plays more Paderewski than any pianist outside Poland? In fact, in terms of sheer spontaneity, pliant rhythmic élan and delicacy of texture, I cannot imagine a more thrilling performance, or one that more fully captures Paderewski's heartfelt message."
GRAMOPHONE

"Paderewski’s Polish Fantasy gets a tremendous performance from Jonathan Plowright " BBC RECORD REVIEW

"Jonathan Plowright's performances are just awesome. Indeed, they are full of bouncy energy, exuberant flair and spectacular pianism, and yet the wit and charm of these scores are always kept in constant perspective."   CLASSICAL MUSIC DAILY

"To animate this typically Polish program, the association Jonathan Plowright/ Lukasz Borowicz works wonderfully....Their agreement...suits these fiery pages which they exalt."   CRESCENDO

"Plowright makes the best possible case for [the Gablenz] in partnership with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Lukasz Borowicz, a champion of neglected Polish music...Paderewski’s Polish Fantasy (1893), his last work for piano and orchestra, is an altogether more refined work…Plowright – who has made Paderewski a speciality – delivers all the required virtuosity"  BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE

TROPHEE de la Radio Classique France

"The deeply romantic Concerto Symphonique, reminiscent of Mendelssohn and Schumann but by no means epigone-like, was presumably written in 1866. Echoes of Chopin cannot be ignored either. It is a characteristic and effective work, wonderfully orchestrated. Lukasz Borowicz and the pianist Jonathan Plowright are clearly on the same interpretative track: their aim is not pathos, not showmanship, not mere virtuosity. One of their most important concerns is dynamic and vivid music-making without false passion. Plowright plays with sweeping, virtuoso gestures, but leaves no doubt that he does not see this work as a mere bravura piece. Borowicz accompanies him with a lean and very colourful orchestral sound.
Plowright’s performances of the solo pieces are beautiful and inspired, with the Polonaise Héroïque, almost ten minutes long, becoming particularly attractive. Plowright breathes perfectly, uses rubato and dynamics very tastefully, his playing is lyrical but without becoming sentimental. He undoubtedly has a good sense of articulation, he knows how to create dramatic intensity, he knows how to put into perspective the forms which he masters so perfectly."
PIZZICATO

"Jonathan Plowright plays the piece with dancing elegance and filigree virtuosity in the numerous figurative passages of the piano part. The piece is clearly influenced by Chopin and suits Plowright's subtle playing. He is an intelligent designer at the piano, has an unbelievably wide range of colors and resilient technology. Under his hands, the Bergson Concerto develops real drama and fine poetry in a particularly beautiful slow movement. A piece that is more than worth listening to and definitely one of the greatest new discoveries in the piano repertoire of the Romantic period!"

UK RELEASE: JULY 2018

"A superlative album in all ways, lusciously played and recorded...Plowright is more deep-throated, willing to pause, wanting to draw the utmost from the lower register of his Steinway. He goes for depth and beauty, not afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve but wary of excessive sentimentality."  CLASSICAL SOURCE

" This program... is sound painting on the piano, sometimes dramatic, often calm, melancholic, thoughtful, always melodic, and designed to create moods. And Jonathan Plowright can do that very well.
He plays the suites with their small, imaginatively composed character pieces with a lot of poetry and warmth, full of charm, lyrical and internal. A ravishingly beautiful interpretation....

...
PIZZICATO

" To have these gorgeous works in such exquisitely animated, tonally rich and expressively wide-ranging performances as Plowright's feels like luxury indeed.  Suk's works have never been better served on disc..."
EUROPADISC

"I've always had a soft spot for Jonathan Plowright.  I've been smitten by his albums of Bach transcriptions for Hyperion, his moving interpretations of Paderewski and now, equally bowled over by this colourful Suk release. Plowright continues to enlighten piano lovers with lesser-known composers; we may count ourselves lucky for his efforts!"   PIANIST

"..this open-air piano has some great attractions, especially so subtly defended by Jonathan Plowright who understands the complex touch, the fleeting rhythms, the language of trills that turns the keyboard into a nightingale ...... Jonathan Plowright has an extra imagination in the timbres, the melodies, the delicacy of the lines and countermelodies, which plunge us into the intimacy of this often delicious world...

ARTALINA

"for those familiar with his Brahms series for BIS, you'll be delighted to know he brings similar qualities of sometimes rugged power and Romantic weight as well as plenty of charm to Suk's attractive miniatures." Andrew McGregor, BBC RADIO 3 Record Review

"It sounds as if Jonathan Plowright has thoroughly enjoyed his foray into the world of the character piece… let me reassure you now that this is music of great inventiveness, full of flights of imagination and no small degree of virtuosity… Plowright’s affection for this music is palpable at every turn"  GRAMOPHONE

"The Briton Jonathan Plowright is one of the greatest sound painters amongst living pianists. He has a huge palette at his disposal, and the piano music of Josef Suk shimmers on this record in all the colors of the rainbow. In addition Plowright is a real virtuoso with sovereign technique, which literally keeps Suk's wild pianistic figures under control. Jonathan Plowright has always been an artist with a view outside the box. With his new CD he adds another jewel to his impressive discography. It is a record for connoisseurs and lovers, because the music of Josef Suk is sophisticated and entertaining at the same time....

"He only plays what's written [in the sheet music], but he does it with such convincing intuition, an exquisitely shaded touch, and a wonderful antenna for the succession of powerful and lyrical passages that one feels tempted to regard Plowright's way as the new benchmark of playing Brahms."
"
PIANO NEWS

"The Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann is as good a place as any to end your five-volume set of Brahms’s piano works, and Plowright’s sensitivity to this “haunting tribute by one composer to the tragedy of another” is superbly presented: paced with the silver thread of that emotive theme holding together a charm-bracelet of musical nuggets that are mostly less than a minute long. Spectacular pianism is well in evidence, but it is the quiet stillness of moments such as Variation VII that are the most memorable...This is a very fine conclusion to a superb set of Brahms’s piano music, and an excellent release in its own right. I can’t imagine anyone coming into contact with any one of these CDs not wanting to own the complete set

Płyną we wspólnym nurcie."
RUCH MUZYCZNY

"A real discovery in recent weeks has been the Symphonic Rhapsody by Zygmunt Stojowski (1870-1946), a Polish composer with a rich, late-Romantic language at his disposal. A piano concerto in all but name, this rhapsody pushes all the right buttons, especially when played with the style that Jonathan Plowright brings to it."  James Jolly, GRAMOPHONE LISTENING ROOM no.5

"In both works, Paderewski’s Piano Concerto and the absolutely brilliant Rhapsody by Zygmunt Stojowski (a world premiere recording), Jonathan Plowright’s playing is powerful and bright, but besides his virtuosity he displays delicacy and sensitivity in the Concerto’s Romanza. Under the energetic and perspicacious conducting of Lukasz Borowicz, the Polish Iuventus Orchestra cares for superb accompaniments, matching the flair and passion of the soloist."
"Ei

"Even Brahms’s most strenuous technical demands hold no fears, the abundant thirds and sixths of Vars 1 and 2 (Book 1) given with an almost airy ease. But more telling still is the sense of playfulness that Plowright brings not only to the theme itself but to myriad variations, which means that the points of stillness (Book 1, Vars 11 & 12) have a truly transcendental air." GRAMOPHONE

"Jonathan Plowright is among the very finest of present-day British pianists. The Paganini Variations are the obvious summit on the fourth volume of his Brahms cycle, full of incredible finger dexterity and richness of tone... The rest of the album, however, is more impressive still. The Four Ballades Op 10 hark back to Julius Katchen (a Brahmsian without compare), in their organic evolution, in Plowright’s hands, from the late Classicism of Beethoven. The late and elusive Op 119 pieces find Plowright at his best, with an outstanding singing tone and the ability to sustain a long line"  PIANIST

"Jonathan Plowright plays stylishly and with an admirable lightness of touch, controlling subtleties of tone and balance even when Paganini’s 24th Caprice seems well buried under avalanches of octaves...the warmth of Brahms' affection for his friends shines through in Plowright's playing - still keeping a respectful distance from overdone histrionics, but letting the notes speak for themselves - at times in all their strangeness - in the best possible way.....Plowright joins us in this voyage of fertile discovery rather than being imperiously above the music.."

INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW

"Plowright has the fiery technique, liquid lyricism and finely mixed palette of tonal colouring to reveal the range of Brahms's music...as inventive and luminous as Plowright's pianism itself"

DAILY TELEGRAPH

"Jonathan Plowright’s survey of Brahms’s piano music for BIS could hardly have got off to a more auspicious start. The main piece here is the F sharp minor Piano Sonata Op 2, and from the first few bars of its opening movement, it’s clear that Plowright has got a perfect sense of the scale and the range of this tricky early work. As well as its technical brilliance, the sense of the boundless invention of the young Brahms worrying away at the constraints of sonata form is vividly present. But the brief moments of introspection are given full weight, too, while the hugely ambitious finale, which can so easily lose its way, is perfectly controlled. The rather introspective and very beautiful Variations on an Original Theme Op 21 No 1 are unfolded with ease and refinement, every inner voice in Brahms’s piano writing precisely etched, while the three Intermezzi of Op 117 shift the scale and focus once again, on to playing of total intimacy and quiet poetry. This series should turn out to be worth following very closely".
THE GUARDIAN

"...behold the most incisive, dramatic, and multi-dimensional account of the composer’s Piano Sonata No. 2 on disc since Katchen and Arrau!..Even in a catalog packed to the rafters with great Brahms piano recordings, this stunning release should not be missed." 10/10
CLASSICSTODAY

"...it takes a master pianist of Plowright’s stature to resolve its complication into lucidity. This he does with all of his customary command: in the opening volley of octaves, the more-than-strange transition passage in the Scherzo and, most of all, in the convoluted Andante, where his playing has an exceptional poise and translucency.....But it is in late Brahms, in the three Op 117 Intermezzos, that Plowright shows himself a true and moving poet of the keyboard."

GRAMOPHONE

"Jonathan Plowright continues his survey of Brahms with another matchless release…. Plowright finds colours and textures in the opening bars so often missed by other pianists. His command of the material is second to none and this is a nuanced and finely judged reading.   If you are looking for a Brahms set with subtlety and empathy to spare this is the one to go for.  Bring on the third volume!"

LIMELIGHT

"Volume One in Jonathan Plowright's Brahms series for BIS paired magnificently perceptive accounts of the mighty Third Sonata and Handel Variations; this successor is just as rewarding, launching as it does with a consummately poised and commandingly articulate performance of the 19-year-old composer's incident-packed F sharp minor Sonata. Plowright is scrupulously faithful to the letter and spirit of this extraordinarily audacious work, negotiating its daunting technical hurdles with almost nonchalant ease. A stunning achievement, this, and a reading to rank alongside those of Claudio Arrau (Philips) and Markus Becker (Thorofon). He's superb, too, in the searchingly poetic, predominantly introspective Variations on an Original Theme, its extended postscript properly serene and lofty. Comparably inspired readings of the illimitably touching, much-loved Op 117 Intermezzi and barnstorming early Op 4 Scherzo round off a riveting programme, which has been captured with tangible realism by the BIS sound team. Not to be missed!"
CLASSICAL EAR

ALLMUSIC.COM

KLASSIK HEUTE

"Jonathan Plowright’s brilliant new release on BIS is certainly one of the best recordings of the Sonata to date….an extraordinarily powerful interpretation…. clarity prevails everywhere and in lyrical sections, assumes a limpid fluency of melting beauty… phrasing is exquisitely shaped…Plowright seems to have a dozen pianissimo dynamics at his disposal, each more quiet and still than the other… The wonderful performance of the Handel Variations that rounds out the disc is a deeply considered interpretation… I would urge you not to miss it."
INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW

"Like Julius Katchen in his classic Brahms recordings for Decca of the 1960s, Plowright fearlessly probes the music’s restless mood swings from heroic outbursts of arresting power to passages of sublime poetic contentment, while never losing sight of its inexorable symphonic sweep.......he magically sustains a singing, golden sonority throughout even the most tempestuous of fortissimo outbursts, and in the long Andante second movement, in which his exemplary command of the music’s dramatic pacing feels entirely natural and inevitable"   SINFINIMUSIC.COM

"Jonathan Plowright's performance has a tremendous warmth...His handling of the layering of musical strands is magnificent, and above all it is the strength of his underlying emotional conviction that makes this such an admirable recording... Plowright differentiates the characters of the Variations with a brilliance of touch and beauty of tone."  BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE

"The fine singing tone and beautiful chordal playing that are his trademarks can be heard on this disc, finely projected in a superlative recording...his is piano playing that very few British pianists can match today"  PIANIST MAGAZINE

"a carefully considered, yet intensely dramatised reading more tempestuous in approach than, say, Radu Lupu’s, but in its own way equally thoughtful…  Plowright has a commanding technique and can bring enormous weight to bear on the keyboard when required, but he can also pull right back – as he does, for example, to realise the beautiful second subject of the first movement….  The Handel Variations are equally distinguished by perfectly executed Baroque articulations (at times taken at considerable lick)….. Please BIS can we have some more?”

"Jonathan Plowright is more than just the next 'new thing' to arrive on the piano scene...If Brahms ever wrote a symphony for the piano then the Sonata No.3 Op.5 is very much this piece, and Plowright's range of expression, his daring periods of absolute repose, extended passages of development and extremes of contrast deliver this impression as few other performances I have encountered....the sheer heft of a grand musical tradition carrying the music beyond pianism to something which engages the imagination on multiple levels...achieving a satisfying synthesis of other worldly transcendence and delicious harmonic thrills....the fireworks with which the piece ends are indeed spectacular.
I was beginning to wonder if now mght be the time to throw in the towel and do something other than this reviewing lark.  Jonathan Plowright's performances soon made me into a believer again, and I suggest he might be able to do the same for you."
MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL

"Jonathan Plowright is a pianist who always excites.....gripping us from the start with its opening declamatory descending octaves and holding us spellbound through to the ecstatic close......a dazzling showcase for his superb talent."
THE OBSERVER

"an impressive sense of direction and charge of energy, qualities which not every pianist captures. His Handel Variations are barn-storming, too, and the piano sound is satisfyingly meaty."  KLASSISK MUSIKKMAGASIN

"He never lets any detail fall out of place, and he is alert to the ways in which central European dance music, the warmth, life-affirming counterpart to Brahms' intellect, is never far from even the most intricate phrases.  A superior Brahms recital." ALLMUSIC.COM

"This Brit is my sort of pianist. His spirituality, intellect and concentration coalesce to produce the finest version of Brahms’s sonata I have heard. If he can inject such spiritual introspection into the long second movement, imagine him playing the poignant adagio of Schubert’s final B flat Sonata....."
NEW ZEALAND LISTENER

"It's a tribute to Jonathan Plowright that his performance on this recording with the Szymanowski Quartet, doesn't pale in comparison to Argerich's"
THE GUARDIAN

“performances by Jonathan Plowright and the Szymanowski Quartet are beautifully judged in lyricism and propulsion, and exploit a gorgeous variety of textures”
THE IRISH TIMES

"The performance marries Jonathan Plowright’s total keyboard command, executed with steely grace and a warmth of tone that shines with silver and gold, to the Szymanowski Quartet’s equally sumptuous mastery of tone and elegance of phrasing"
AUDIOPHILE AUDITION / HUFFINGTON POST

"playing by the Szymanowski Quartet and the witty, supportive, but when required, brilliant pianism of Jonathan Plowright, is superb and captured in very rich sound.    A CD no one who loves chamber music will want to be without."  10/10
CLASSICS TODAY.COM

Jonathan Plowright’s newest CD should be a must in the music collection of every Polish music lover"
RUCH MUZYCZNY    (to read this article in English click here)

"The Paderewski album contains great variety, power, rhythmic vitality and charm. It’s been brilliantly brought to life by Plowright who, I have always found, is a natural studio performer, one who can transcend the supposed limitations of such an undertaking to bring a richly communicative spirit to bear. Of his technical command, we hardly need comment; he’s terrific. The recorded sound is also first class - natural, warm, without flaw. An outstanding disc then."

NPR Best JS Bach Release of 2010

DIAPASON découverte

"it is the outstanding performances by the Yorkshire-born pianist Jonathan Plowright, on whom critics these days seem to lavish nothing but superlatives, that make this a very noteworthy release indeed......all are approached with profound musicality combined with a formidable yet unobtrusive technique more than equal to their significant demands.....I find this an extremely satisfying listening experience, and one I’ve returned to several times. Its appeal, it seems to me, is the tremendous sincerity that characterizes Plowright’s vivid interpretations, his first-rate pianism, and an almost indescribable quality of profound calm that hovers above the entire program. Warmly recommended."

RADIO NEW ZEALAND

"The combination of top-flight artist, superb recording quality and truly imaginative, attractive programming seems quintessentially Hyperion. With this disc the enterprising record company has produced yet another winner.  The Balakirev is a triumph.... The work contains moments of great subtlety as well as Islamey-like all-out virtuosity. Jonathan Plowright seems equally at home in either mode of expression."
MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL

"A fascinating collection, brilliantly dispatched by Plowright."
MAIL ON SUNDAY

"Jonathan Plowright brings superb technique and grace to this anthology of Chopin tributes. Besides his lyrical renditions of the Bender nocturne and other "dreamy" Romantic-era evocations, I was especially impressed by the flintiness and grandeur of his Busoni Variations, by the swagger of his Leschetizky Hommage, and by the contrasting moods of his Villa-Lobos renditions: the damp exoticism of the Nocturne and the flaring melodrama of the Ballade."
ENJOYTHEMUSIC.COM

"This Hyperion release is simply stunning....The plaudits for Plowright... confirm a colossal musical mind and matching technical ease."
INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW

"Plowright enhances his glowing reputation as a musical alchemist of rare distinction with a transcendent technique."
GRAMOPHONE

"Jonathan Plowright explores more of the Polish keyboard repertoire with these technically unforgiving but hugely enjoyable late 19th-century works by Henryk Melcer.  The second requires tremendous stamina from Plowright, who plays almost continually, ending with a massive final allegro that will take your breath away."
OBSERVER

"Plowright sounds completely unfazed by even the most note-splattered pages, throwing himself into the fray with abandonment and aplomb"
CLASSIC FM MAGAZINE

"Jonathan Plowright provides a masterclass in dexterity at the keyboard, rising to meet all of the composer's challenges with a combination of scintillating virtuosity and deft sensitivity. The end of the C minor Concerto's opening movement is particularly telling, as he delivers the brilliant cadenza with utter authority before gently whisking the music away with a flourish of almost impossibly quick semiquavers."
MUSICALCRITICISM.COM

"Jonathan Plowright's ability to identify with works of such obscurity and brilliance does him credit. More to the point he has this wonderful ability to articulate to listeners the delights and joys of these utterly forgotten works."
MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL

In Melcers 2.
KLASSIK HEUTE

"Throughout Jonathan Plowright plays with dedication, affection and technical aplomb"
CLASSICALSOURCE.COM

"Given the rarity of the repertoire, Jonathan Plowright and Christoph Konig have done a superb job of absorbing Melcer’s idiom. Care over both works’ expressive rhetoric is everywhere apparent in performances that suggest affectionate familiarity."
BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE

"Both concertos previously have been recorded, but not to the exacting and scintillating standards set here. .. Jonathan Plowright commands the ways and means to obtain maximum character and musicality from Melcer’s thankless double notes, taxing interlocking octaves, and less than grateful leaps. At the same time, his large portfolio of articulations and pedalings ennoble the composer’s slower, more lyrical pages.
CLASSICSTODAY.COM

"No matter what Melcer throws at him, Plowright not only emerges completely unscathed but sounds as though he's having the time of his life"
INTERNATIONAL PIANO MAGAZINE

"He is a constant joy."

"it would be hard to imagine playing of greater sympathy or a more intimidating visceral strength and cogency. MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL

"Man of the moment and Hyperion star Jonathan Plowright kicks off with Poulenc. This is cultured and imaginative playing, not short on charm and power either and he mines those moments of Chopinesque delicacy, Schumannesque reverie, Stravinskian tartness and music-hall drollery that makes this so irresistible a score. Le Coeur sur la main is especially lyrical and the ‘Handel in the Strand meets Music Hall’ romp negotiated with real verve. In the final stretch where Poulenc asks for Follement vite Plowright is certainly fast but also meticulously precise over articulation. This is the meatiest work on the disc."
